Our student-centered projects are typically four to six weeks long and engage students by encouraging them to learn critical thinking and problem-solving skills throughout each step of the project. We carefully design these projects using the Colorado standards in relevant and timely projects that help our students learn more deeply and authentically. Each project contains seven essential Project Design Elements (Challenging Problem or Question, Sustained Inquiry, Authenticity, Student Voice & Choice, Reflection, Critique & Revision, Public Product).
Why Project Based Learning?
Until recently, the design of education had been largely shaped by the needs of the industrial revolution, a framework that’s over 100 years old. Today, however, our society and economy have evolved, creating new demands. Modern communities require schools that help students develop essential skills such as creative thinking, collaboration, communication, leadership, and real-world engagement—skills needed not just in the classroom, but in everyday life.
Project Based Learning Resources
Our children need a way to learn that engages the heart, mind, and soul while preparing them for the world they live in. Through Project Based Learning (PBL) your child will actively learn in authentic and tangible ways. Our amazing educators work hard to plan each unit in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade to weave core content and standards into projects that students help to drive.
Project Highlights
5th Grade
A highlight of fifth grade is the Food Truck Project. Students dive into research and hands-on activities to explore the five U.S. regions, creating a food truck business that highlights the unique food and culture of one region. Working collaboratively, teams design menus, craft logos and truck designs, and write persuasive pieces to attract members of the school community to their truck. At the end of the project, food trucks are showcased, voted on, and awarded the title of “Best Food Truck” for each region!
4th Grade
Fourth graders can’t get enough of the “Crash Test Eggies” project! This exciting STEAM challenge brings in experts like police crash investigators and automobile designers to help students create vehicle prototypes designed to protect an egg during a crash test. The project immerses students in the engineering process as they test, revise, and retest their designs leading up to the final crash. In addition, student design teams pitch their proposed designs, materials, and budgets to panels of experts for approval before building their prototypes.
3rd Grade
The 3rd Grade Market Day project is an exciting experience for everyone involved! In this project, students create their own businesses and sell goods or services to customers throughout the school community. Partnering with Junior Achievement, students gain valuable insights into building a business and developing financial literacy. Market Day is a highly anticipated event at Legacy Peak, where students, staff, and parents come together to shop and support these young entrepreneurs!
2nd Grade
Service learning and community building take center stage in 2nd grade projects! As students explore the concept of resource scarcity in our community, they lead the charge in organizing our annual Harvest of Love Food Drive. From creating donation themes to making announcements and posters, 2nd graders take full ownership of the event, even managing the collection process for our local Care and Share organization. Each year, we are inspired by their dedication to this meaningful service project and their ability to rally the entire school community to make a difference!
1st Grade
The annual Starry Night event is a shining highlight of 1st grade! In partnership with the Challenger Learning Center, 1st grade students become budding experts on stars and the moon. Families are invited to this special evening to explore the night sky and learn from our young astronomers. The event also features a visit to the Challenger Planetarium and opportunities to observe the stars and moon through telescopes provided by local astronomers, making it an unforgettable experience for all!
Kindergarten
What came first, the chicken or the egg? For kindergarteners, their favorite project is the “Oviparous Animals” learning experience! Students dive into the fascinating life cycles of ladybugs, butterflies, and chickens, observing these animals up close. The excitement peaks as each classroom hatches baby chicks right before their eyes! To wrap up the project, our young oviparous experts create presentations to share their newfound knowledge with their proud grown-ups. This engaging spring project is the perfect way to celebrate a year of kindergarten learning!
