Meet the Principal
Principal: Jonathan Johnson
My family is my home. Sara Jean is my wife and she is an outstanding yoga instructor and mother. Lena is our amazing daughter who is an active and joyful toddler learning to ride her bike. Our sweet puppy of 12 years recently passed away and we look forward to one day having a dog's presence in our lives again.
I was born in Minneapolis and lived there until third grade. We then moved to New York until the end of eighth grade when we moved to Colorado Springs, Colo.
My freshman year of high school was spent at Academy District 20's Liberty High School and I went on to graduate from Air Academy High. After high school I attended Crown College in Minnesota and earned a degree in elementary education.
Following college, I returned to Colorado Springs, Colo., to begin my career in education. During my time teaching in Academy District 20 I received my master's degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in reading at the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs (UCCS). (I'm proud to say I took as many courses as possible with Dr. Swaby.) I also received my Administrative License through UCCS and Academy District 20.
My Career in Education
Prairie Hills Elementary – taught first grade for seven years.
Antelope Trails Elementary - taught third and fifth grade for nearly five and a half years.
The daVinci Academy – served as assistant principal for nearly two years.
Breckenridge Elementary – served as principal for five years.
I love whitewater rafting, serving as a guide for more than 17 years. I also love snowboarding, mountain biking, working on my Jeep, basketball, yoga, sprint triathlons, backpacking, collecting Spiderman and Ironheart comic books and dreaming of one day restoring a '68 Mustang. By the way, whenever you visit my office you have to hunt down all the different Spiderman collectibles…they are everywhere!
I have a passion for being an adoption advocate, an impactful public education that benefits ALL children, leading by doing, empowering teachers, students finding the power of a growth mindset and agency.
Although I loved my time as a principal in Breckenridge, I can't wait to begin this new journey in my return to Academy District 20 as we open brand new elementary school that is founded in the amazing methodology of Project Based Learning.
